How to make Grilled Spring Onions – a great summer side
Try some great and simple recipe tonight, grilled spring onions in the simplest of ways.
Spring onions is a great vegetable and is also known as scallions or green onions. You can read more about what to call them at the end of the post. I use spring onions in potato salads, steamed with salt, sliced in sauces and dips and it’s a staple in lots of asian dishes. No wonder since it’s great in both flavor and texture. One thing that you may not have tried though is to grill it.
If you haven’t tried grilled spring onions before then now is the time, it is very easy to and it completely changes everything about the onion, from crunchy with intense sharp flavor of onion to a smoky charred aroma from the grilling and a soft and a bit fatty texture and the flavor turning sweet. It truly is amazing, this is how it’s done.
Grilled spring onions
serves 2, as a side
10 spring onions
2 tbsp olive oil
salt, pepper
Cut the ends and root away from the spring onions and rinse in cold water. If any of the onions are very thick you can split them in half lengthwise. Toss in olive oil and add salt and pepper. Place on a hot grill and grill until it starts to soften, turning them every 30-40 seconds. The whole process shouldn’t take more than five minutes. Serve straight away. Good luck.
About spring onions, scallions and green onions
Spring onion, scallions and green onions all mean the same thing. It is an Allium species onion with hollow green leaves just like a normal onion. The difference is that the bulb is not developed into a normal onion. Besides the names already mentioned for them there are more regional names out there. It doesn’t really matter since they all taste good.
In spring time you can buy fresh regular onions and use them in the same way as spring onions. The bulb is bigger but the hollow leaves are just as tasty. You can also find red spring onions sometimes, get them if you do. Why not put those on the grill as well.
